First Light

The first light from the rising sun beams through a rock arch along the shore of Lake Superior on a cool clear October morning.

Light is an amazing phenomena, it is both an electromagnetic wave and a particle. We see things every day, from the moment we get up in the morning until we go to sleep at night. We look at everything around us using light. We see beautiful sunrises, fine oil paintings, gorgeous sunsets, a blue sky, northern lights and rainbows. But did you ever stop to think that when we see any of these things, we are not directly connected to it? We are, in fact, seeing light -- light that somehow left objects far or near and reached our eyes. Light is all our eyes can really see.

God has give us eyes to see his wonderful creation, and help us understand who he is by what we see. Everything of the natural universe, represents the attributes of God the creator. What an awesome gift, to be able to know something of God just by looking.

Another gift he has given us is the Bible, where we can read and see with our minds eye, who He is. When creation is explained by God's word, the puzzle pieces come together, and our focus becomes clearer. We can understand that we are part of His creation plan, and by knowing the plan, we can glorify and enjoy Him each day.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
And the earth was without form and empty. And darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved on the face of the waters
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. (Genesis)

Secret Places

The South Shore of Lake Superior has many hidden waterfalls much like this one tucked away in secret places that seldom draw much attention.
On this warm October afternoon the forest air was saturated with the sweet smell of cedar clinging to the moist air near the waterfall. Sunshine filtered through the trees making the leaves glow against the rumbling water. It was a rare moment, and one that makes you think about the God who composed such art, for such a time as this.

With the shorter days of Autumn the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves and as the green color fades away, we begin to see yellow and orange colors. Small amounts of these colors have been in the leaves all along. We just can't see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green chlorophyll.

It always amazes me how the most beautiful leaf colors are saved until last, just before they die and fall off the tree. I'm reminded that it's a cycle of life that God instituted and in fact the leaves become fertilizer for new growth, the tree will grow new leaves come springtime and the cycle will begin again.

Much like the waterfall in the background, the water will flow into Lake Superior, evaporate and fall as rain some day and the cycle will continue.

The cycles of nature reflect God's promise of eternal life in a glorious heaven with an everlasting loving God. What a joy to have His natural world point that out in everything around us.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; (Ecclesiastes 3)
