Ruby in Flight

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird returns to the Lake Superior area in mid-May and is the only species of hummingbird that breeds in eastern North America. This little bird that weighs less than two ounces, and is only three inches long, flies nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico on its return flight from its wintering area in Central America.

One of the most striking features of hummingbirds is iridescence. Iridescence results from microscopic feather structures that break apart light and strongly reflect back only certain colors. When light strikes at just the right angle, iridescent feathers appear to glow brilliantly and with very pure colors. Male hummingbirds have brilliant iridescent red throats and females white.

The tiny creature not only hover at flowers and feeders to drink nectar, but, they also catch insects in flight and pluck them from leaves webs.
God uses nature in many ways to reveal to us His attributes, and the beautiful hummingbird is a perfect example of Gods glory.

So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that scurries and swarms in the water, and every sort of bird—each producing offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good. Gen 1:21

Invisible Light

At first glance, this image looks like a typical winter scene. However, this picture was taken using a camera that only sees Infrared Light. It looks at the same light spectrum as your TV remote uses to change channels. This light is invisible to our eyes and is in the electromagnetic spectrum just beyond what we can see.

I remember using IR cameras in the 70's and 80's in military aerial reconnaissance missions to capture the landscape with the greatest possible clarity over a wide range of atmospheric conditions.

Anything green appears white in IR. Flowers are bright, the sky is dark, but clouds are bright. It is an interesting way to view our world. The Hubble telescope uses IR to see parts of the universe that cannot be seen with normal observation.

Although IR does not include any of the colors from the visible light spectrum, such as the blue sky, colors can be added to an IR picture using a special technique. This is called false color, and is added only for artistic expression.

If the invisible infrared light wasn't captured by the camera sensor for this picture, all we would see would be black darkness.

The Bible talks about being able to see the invisible, it's called faith. As surely as the unseen world of infrared exists, so does the spiritual world that God dwells in. Faith gives us new eyes to see a world beyond ourselves, and to believe in the God of the universe.

God created to heavens and the earth to reveal himself to us through our natural eyes, and He gave us the Bible to reveal himself to us through spiritual eyes.

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, "The just shall live by faith." Rom 1:17

Spring Runoff at Gooseberry Falls

When I pulled into the parking lot at 6AM on this early spring morning, the sun had already risen and I could hear the distant falls, roaring with melt-water. A few fishermen were unpacking their gear, getting ready to try their luck ,catching the trout that had moved into the river.

Although spring was late this year, there was no mistaking its arrival. The river was full, fishermen were out, sap was starting to flow through the limbs of the maple trees and the sun was already warm. It's days lake this that make you appreciate being able to live in this area.

It was a good day to be alive. I made my way around the falls taking pictures as I went and stopping to enjoy the beautiful creation that God placed in front of me. There is something about watching water tumble down waterfalls that seems to settle the soul and renew the mind and it seemed to work on this morning in May.

The LORD will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring. Isa 58:11
